(LANSING, Mich.) -- State officials say over 5,000 wireless devices have been reported stolen in Michigan so far this year, and the number of thefts continue to rise.

"The popularity of wireless devices continues to grow at a rapid pace," Michigan Public Service Chairman John Quackenbush said in a statement. "The Commission encourages customers to take a moment to protect themselves against theft by following the helpful tips provided by the FCC."

The FCC tips are:

  • Consider your surroundings and use your device discreetly at locations in which you feel unsafe.
  • Never leave your device unattended in a public place.
  • Write down the device's make, model number, serial number and unique device identification number.
  • Review your warranty or service agreement to find out what will happen if your phone is stolen or lost.
