Mike Rice Still Coaching Girls' Basketball Team For 12-Year-Olds

Mike Rice Is Still Coaching

Mike Rice, the disgraced former Rutgers University basketball coach, is keeping busy by coaching a hoops team for 12-year-olds.

Rice was fired from Rutgers on April 3 after ESPN released video showing him using profane slurs and throwing basketballs at his college players.

Yet, over the weekend, some people spotted Rice coaching an Amateur Athletic Union girls' basketball team at a tournament in Holmdel, N.J. Rice is listed as the leader of the seventh-grade "Shore Shots" on the team's website, and his daughter is one of the players, according to the Asbury Park Press.

Deadspin picked up on a few tweets from blogger Brian Geltzeiler, who said he was told Rice was "crazy as ever," yelling at referees and kids:

But the Asbury Park Press and SNY.tv report that the parents stand by Rice as their daughters' coach.

"The Deadspin report is a gross misrepresentation of the facts," a source close to the team told SNY.tv. "The team's parents are fully behind Coach Rice and his instruction of their daughters."

Traci Moore, a mother of a player on Rice's team, similarly defended him to the New York Post, saying, "Mike is doing this because this is what he does. This is what he loves."

Rice did not return a request for comment from The Huffington Post.
