After Mitt Romney's campaign released a television ad that painted the candidate as moderate on abortion, a new ad released by President Barack Obama's campaign on Thursday holds Romney accountable for a much firmer anti-abortion position he previously took.
The ad accuses Romney of trying to mislead voters on his real abortion position. It shows footage of Anderson Cooper asking Romney during a 2007 Republican Primary debate whether, if Roe v. Wade were overturned, he would sign a federal ban on all abortions. “Let me say it," Romney responds. "I’d be delighted to sign that bill.”

Romney's current position on abortion is that he opposes it, except in cases of rape, incest or if the life of the mother is in danger, and he has pledged to appoint justices to the Supreme Court who would overturn Roe v. Wade. He says he will defund Planned Parenthood and reinstate the Mexico City Policy, which prevents U.S. foreign aid dollars from flowing to international organizations that counsel patients on or refer them to abortions.
Romney also wrote in a National Review op-ed in June 2011 that he would support a "Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act," which is a ban on abortions after 20 weeks of gestation. However, he forgot or went back on that promise when he told the Des Moines Register earlier this month that he did not intend to make anti-abortion legislation part of his agenda.
