Mitt Romney Likens Alabama Crowd To 'Can Of Sardines'

Rain or shine, Mitt Romney has his way with words.

The GOP frontrunner's Monday campaign event in Alabama was shrouded by stormy weather. To escape the inclement conditions, Romney's Mobile ralliers huddled under a restaurant overhang.

At that point, Romney took a moment to comment on the tightly-packed crowd.

"Look at us in here," he said. "We are all nice together, all nice and wet, you know, like a can of sardines."

Sardines may not be Romney's most appetizing reference, but the Republican presidential hopeful has been open about exploring other local tastes. Politico adds that during his Sunday dinner with Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, Romney "had catfish for the second time."

While campaigning in Mississippi on Wednesday, Romney broke some breakfast news, turning to another Southern favorite.

"I'm learning to say 'y'all' and I like grits," he joked during a speech in Pascagoula. "Strange things are happening to me."

Outside of discovering new foods on the campaign trail, Romney has given plants their due. At an appearance Michigan last month, the GOP frontrunner demonstrated his appreciation for trees.

"I love this state. The trees are the right height," he told a Feb. 21 crowd. Three days later, he reiterated his arboreal awe, noting that "this feels good, being back in Michigan. You know, the trees are the right height."

These Romney references followed up instances in 2008 and 2011, when he also commented on the trees being the right height.
