GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney released a new ad Wednesday hitting President Barack Obama over the falling fortunes of middle-class Americans in the past four years. The ad both reminds voters of Romney's strong debate performance with footage from the Denver clash and attacks Obama on the economy, an issue on which likely voters gave him low marks in a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll.
"Look at the evidence of the last four years. Under the president's policies, middle-income Americans have been buried. They're just being crushed," says Romney in the ad. "Middle-income Americans have seen their income come down by $4,300. This is a tax in and of itself. I'll call it the economy tax."
"I'm not going to raise taxes on anyone," he adds. "My plan is to bring down rates to get more people working. My priority is putting people back to work in America."
Obama has cited a study by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center showing that, mathematically speaking, Romney's twin goals of cutting tax rates by 20 percent across the board and keeping any changes revenue-neutral can only be met by limiting popular middle-class tax deductions and credits.
