Mitt Romney, Obama Fail To Woo Some Party Voters: Poll

With convention season officially underway, both candidates are fighting to rally their bases -- even as some within their own parties remain unconvinced. Three in 10 Republicans said they would prefer the GOP to nominate someone other than Mitt Romney, according to a CNN/ORC International poll released Tuesday. A somewhat smaller portion of Democrats expressed disenchantment with the president, saying they'd prefer to have a party nominee other than Barack Obama.

The figures leave 69 percent of Republicans and 81 percent of Democrats happy with their nominee. "Historically, that figure is not bad," said CNN polling director Keating Holland. In a poll taken in late August 2008, 42 percent of Republican voters said they'd prefer a different nominee to John McCain. A total of 40 percent of Democratic voters, who were asked specifically if they would have rather seen Obama or Hillary Clinton get the nod, said they would have preferred Clinton or another nominee to Obama.

The CNN/ORC poll was conducted using live phone interviews on Aug. 22 and 23. It surveyed 473 registered Republicans or Republican-leaning independents, with a 4.5 percent margin of error, and 404 Democrats or Democratic-leaning independents, with a 5 percent margin of error.
