After getting a glimpse of Disney’s newest princess as a baby, we weren’t sure we could get any more excited for the release of “Moana.” That is, until we found out she was the independent heroine of our dreams.
At San Diego’s Comic-Con on Wednesday, “Moana” directors John Musker and Ron Clements revealed that the film’s title character will not have a love interest at all.
“There is no romance in the movie,” Musker said when asked what sets Moana apart from other Disney princesses during a Q&A session. Moana’s story will be about finding herself, rather than finding love, reports Entertainment Weekly.
Considering the majority of Disney princess storylines have revolved around romance and happily-ever-afters, Moana’s story seems like a breath of fresh air. And from what we’ve seen of the movie so far, there will be no shortage of incredible characters, including an adorable pig sidekick named Pua, Polynesian demigod Maui, and a sentient version of the Pacific Ocean.
Moana will be voiced by native Hawaiian actress Auli’i Cravalho while Maui will be played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
The film’s directors also revealed during the Comic Con panel that Johnson will sing a song written specifically for him by “Hamilton” writer Lin-Manuel Miranda.
At this point, it’s a miracle that we haven’t fainted from excitement.
“Moana” will hit theaters Nov. 23, 2016.
