Mondo Guerra Tells 'Project Runway' Judges He's HIV-Positive (VIDEO)

While catching up with "Project Runway" this weekend, we were moved by contestant Mondo Guerra's emotional judging segment in which he tells the panel he is HIV positive.

The challenge was to create a textile pattern inspired by old family photos, evoking "something deeply personal." Guerra created black, yellow and magenta plus-sign print pants, explaining, "The symbolism in the pants are these pluses are positive signs and I've been HIV positive for ten years. When I saw these pictures of my family, it brought back a lot of emotion, so I wanted to pull from the past but also give something back of who I am now."

UPDATE: Stylelist has an interview with Guerra about the video below. In it, Guerra reveals that he only told his family about his status five days before the episode aired and he held "a viewing party and silent auction to benefit the Colorado AIDS Project and Rainbow Alley, which does work with gay teens. We raised over $8,000."

Stylelist asked Guerra about the response from the crowd there once they'd seen the show. Guerra told the site, "There were cheers, but people wanted to talk too. One man said, "I have a 14-year-old son who is gay and after this episode, I feel like I can talk to him about anything." Another woman gave me $500. She was her brother's caretaker and he had just passed away from AIDS and she was the only person he could talk to. I related to the isolation she talked about."
