Motivation -- It's Overrated!

We are all trying to get something done -- big or small, mental or physical, emotional or spiritual. Something's on our reinvention list that we want to tackle so how do we get ourselves to the DO IT phase vs the I-really-wish-I-had-the-motivation-to-do-it phase?

So it's Saturday morning and I truly have nothing to do. One of those days where you check your last few weeks of "To Do" lists to consolidate them so you can check everything off on this one day... because I really have nothing I have to do. And I need it!

I was up at 8 a.m. to take my son to his baseball game which won't start for a while so it would be the perfect time to go to a quick dance class, walk the dog, get on the exercise bike, squeeze in a Zumba class at home or the local studio... nope! I have all those errands that are now on my list. How could I consider working out with the dry cleaning waiting for me, the car unwashed and these nails chipped?

It's funny how when exercising is the priority in your life, everything else falls in place around it. You would leave your teenagers to starve for an hour for that fabulous hour of dancing up a storm, miss an hour of that three-hour baseball game, even forfeit eating to replace it with the euphoria and pride you feel when you're done and can pat yourself on the back.

So why am I sitting at the car wash, writing this blog instead of rockin' out with my sweat?
Motivation... or the lack thereof!

We are all trying to get something done -- big or small, mental or physical, emotional or spiritual. Something's on our reinvention list that we want to tackle so how do we get ourselves to the DO IT phase vs the I-really-wish-I-had-the-motivation-to-do-it phase?

Allow yourself the time to NOT do something. We're always racing and doing -- not being. We need to BE a little too. We may not have time for a Buddhist retreat but for goodness sake, hang back some time and stop checking those lists. Smell the roses; recharge and motivation will come when you're ready. So instead of beating myself up and going through the guilt trip today, I'm going to allow myself the graceful acceptance that it's just not going to happen.

I'll accept that I'm just not in the mood NOW. Maybe later after my son's game, after lunch, before we go out tonight. Maybe if I put on my iPod I'll get in the mood and my entire disposition will change... Maybe not!

It's OK! Some days we just aren't motivated.

But, what I will do is call someone and make a plan for tomorrow. That I can commit to. The plan for a friend to motivate me to do what I know I'll want to do but that extra nudge will help.

It's OK. No guilt, no regrets. There's tomorrow and that works. Allow yourself that.
