New 'Robocop' Shifted To 2014; Matt Damon's 'Elysium' Moved To Aug. 2013

Bad News For 'Robocop' Fans

"Robocop" will patrol the streets a little later than expected. Sony announced that the remake of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 classic has been delayed from its original release date on Aug. 9, 2013 to Feb. 7, 2014. In conjunction with that move, the Neill Blomkamp film "Elysium," with Matt Damon and Jodie Foster in lead roles, has shifted from March 14, 2013 to the now-open August date.

According to THR, delaying "Robocop" for six months will give the production time to work on special effects, however the trade notes that no official reason was given for change.

"Robocop" -- which stars Joel Kinnaman in the title role, and features Michael Keaton, Michael K. Williams, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, Jay Baruchel, Jackie Earle Haley and Abbie Cornish -- has been on the receiving end of a ton of negative press over the last three months. In August, HitFix writer Drew McWeeny trashed an early draft of the "Robocop" script on Twitter. "I tried to read the 'Robocop' remake, but 20 pages in my nose started bleeding and I forgot my name," he wrote.

In September, a set picture of Kinnaman in his "Robocop" suit leaked online via Coming Soon and was met with equally harsh critiques.

"I wonder, is this 'Dark Knight' getup the only version of RoboCop we'll see in the new movie?" wrote Lauren Davis from io9.com, noting the similarities between the Robocop costume and the suit worn by Batman in Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy.
