Mexican silver Olympic track medalist Noe Hernandez died Wednesday of a heart attack in a hospital in the Mexico City metropolitan area, local media report.

Hernandez, 34, died past noon, after being transferred by his family for a health discomfort he felt at home.

The winner of the silver medal at the Sydney 2000 Olympics running 20 kilometers had suffered an attack last December 30 in a local bar. He was admitted to the hospital in serious condition and lost his left eye and nearly all vision in his right eye after being shot in the face. The athlete was later discharged after undergoing reconstructive surgery in his head.

Police have not identified the perpetrators of the attack, but in an interview with the media a couple of days ago, Hernandez had assured the attack was intentionally directed against him, without specifying the cause.

They wanted to attack me or something like that because the shot was almost, almost planned,” Hernandez told Televisa’s “Primero Noticias” morning news show about the Dec. 30 attack that also left two dead and one other person wounded.
