President Barack Obama's limos will sport those "Taxation Without Representation" tags, added for the inauguration, permanently.
In response to a petition on the White House's "We The People" website calling for Obama to place "Taxation Without Representation" license plates on the presidential limo, Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs David Agnew says, "Those tags are staying on."
Agnew also reiterated Obama's support for full representation and autonomy for D.C in his spirited response titled "No Taxation Without Representation":
That slogan rings just as true today as it did back in 1773.
After living in the District for four years, President Obama has seen firsthand how unfair it is for D.C. residents to spend their lives working hard, raising children, and paying taxes without a vote in Congress.
We hope you noticed that during his Inauguration President Obama's Motorcade was sporting the D.C. "Taxation without Representation" license plates. Well, we've got some good news for you.
Those tags are staying on.
President Obama supports a vote in Congress for the people of Washington, D.C. -- as well as Home Rule and budget autonomy.
President Obama will continue to show his support for efforts in Congress to bring full representation for the people of the District of Columbia -- including displaying its license plates.
Typically, a petition on "We The People" needs to accrue 25,000 signatures to warrant a response from the Obama Administration. However, this petition was the exception -- garnering only 3,735 signatures before the White House responded.
The petition was filed by DC Vote, a nonprofit organization that works toward establishing full representation in Congress and autonomy for the District, in December.
In early January, the D.C. City Council unanimously approved a resolution demanding that Obama put the "Taxation Without Representation" tags on the presidential limo. Councilmember Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3) and Council Chairman Phil Mendelson (D-At Large) presented an official license plate with the slogan to Agnew and the Obama Administration only three days after the resolution passed, according to the Washington Post.
The very next week, the Obama Administration announced they would use the license plates on presidential limousines.
