Obama's Education Reforms Criticized By Civil Rights Groups

President Barack Obama recently laid out a series of education reforms -- and many aren't happy about them. According to the Washington Post, a coalition of civil rights groups wrote a 17-page letter to the president explaining the new program's faults and how they can be remedied.

The group, which includes the Schott Foundation for Public Eduation, the NAACP and the National Urban League, claims that the recommended policies hardly promote education equality for all.

Among the initiatives criticized are the expansion of charter schools and a reauthorization of No Child Left Behind.

Still, the President is willing to discuss the directives. Inside Higher Ed reports an NBC News announcement of a summit on public education. In September, a variety of public officials, including Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, will meet to discuss the topic in Rockefeller Plaza.
