The Bold Italic's Office Space Designed By Kelly Malone On California Home+Design (PHOTOS)

Pencils Like You've Never Seen Them Before

San Francisco is a hub for many design- and DIY-lovers. And, one of the city's well-known talents is Kelly Malone, who runs Workshop, a DIY "school" that offers classes with topics ranging from basic screen-printing to how to set up your own store business. And now, she's also adding interior designer to her resume. Kelly recently transformed a warehouse-style spot into the new office-and-events space for the local online publication The Bold Italic, and the completed office is currently featured over at California Home + Design's new site.

Given only one month and a small budget to turn an expansive open space into a functional workplace, Kelly had to think creatively and act quickly. First, she asked some friends to create custom furniture from salvaged wood and scrap metal. Her only rule for them was that all the pieces had to be made for $100 or less. Not the easiest thing, but not impossible. The results included a large coffee table with an old table-saw base to a wood plank light fixture. Then came the smaller details, which gave Kelly the chance to show off her DIY skills. And, she totally proved herself beyond worthy, from projects like updating a handful of typewriters with bright enamel paint to creating an accent wall that's covered in hundreds of No. 2 pencils that were hand-glued on.

Needless to say, we're thoroughly impressed by Kelly's design and DIY work for the new office. It's spacious but also comfortable, thanks to all the seating areas throughout, and the custom-made pieces are unique but don't take away from the building's industrial features (raw brick walls, exposed ceiling pipes). We think it almost feels like a giant loft apartment in a way. But, most importantly, we think Kelly did a great job with making the place a reflection of The Bold Italic's alternative style, which can be summed up in one word: Hip.
