Social media users are painting the Internet orange today in support of a campaign to defend the rights and safety of women and girls.
For this month's Orange Day topic, the U.N.'s UNiTE To End Violence Against Women Campaign is asking social media users to help make the internet a safer space for women and girls by speaking out against online sexual exploitation, pornography, trafficking, cyberstalking and other issues that affect women and girls.
The campaign asks people to tweet #OrangeDay statuses, follow the @SayNO_UNiTE handle, change their personal Facebook profile pictures to the UNiTE Ribbon logo, and post awesome photos of themselves wearing orange.
Last year, in an effort to raise awareness about various issues women face across the globe, the Secretary-General declared the 25th of each month Orange Day. Each Orange Day aims to raise awareness about important agreements made at the U.N.'s 57th Session on the Commission of the Status of Women, a conference dedicated to empowering women and girls worldwide.
Past Orange Days have focused on creating safe work places, safe homes, and safe state custody and state care environments for women.
