Orange Line Delays: Electrical Problems Slow Trains

WASHINGTON -- Electrical problems involving Pepco and two Metro traction substations are leading to slow travel along the Orange Line. The transit agency reported Wednesday morning that trains traveling between the Potomac Avenue and Cheverly stations are operating at reduced speeds as Metro is "backfeeding" power from other substations. The power problems are also affecting Blue Line trains between the Potomac Avenue and Benning Road stations.

The reduced power on the Orange Line is likely to affect commuters coming into the District of Columbia from Virginia as Metro cannot operate eight-car trains, meaning reduced passenger capacity.

Metro reports that Pepco has not yet given an estimated time of repair.

UPDATE, 12:42 p.m.: Metro reports that Pepco has restored power to one of the substations, so trains are moving at slower speeds only through the stretch of the Orange Line between the Minnesota Avenue and Cheverly stations.
