Recently, I had a "sit down session" with my daughter and shared some lessons learned from my parents in a video. You may view the video here. I have learned important lessons from my parents that I will share with you. My mother was a most loving person and was always grateful for the smallest things. My father was a most generous and compassionate soul. He always told me, "Do good for the sake of good, not for the sake of reward."
Four virtues I have learned from parents are love, generosity, gratitude and compassion. Love everyone without reservation. Live with a philosophy of "Love all serve all." This is Agape love where you honor the divinity in every other human being.
Be generous at all times. A simple smile to a stranger is an act of generosity. Generosity is not always about money. Help anyone you can without a second thought.
Live in gratitude all the time. There is so much to be grateful for. Think of three to five things you are grateful for before you go to sleep.
Finally be compassionate towards all. Remember the nice quote from the Dalai Lama, "If you want others to be happy, practice Compassion. If you want to be happy, practice Compassion." There is a wise man.
Now that you have grown and become an adult. This is my advice for you:
- Be honest.
- Keep your word.
- Be on time.
- Be dependable.
- Learn from your mistakes.
- And maintain a balance in life -- at work, with family, your health and spirituality.
Let me share my hopes and dreams for you, my daughter. Establish a family. Find yourself a soulmate and get married. Then follow the three C's of marriage:
commitment, communication, and compromise.
Have absolute open communication. And be willing to compromise on all small and big things. I will add two more C's to this
cuddling and comedy
. Cuddling: Find time to hold each other every day, and some quite time for yourselves. Comedy: Make laughter a big part of this happy marriage.
A few thoughts for raising children:
Play games and listen to your children. You may be a disciplinarian during the day but, every night make sure you listen to them carefully in this 1-on-1 time alone. Before going to bed ask them these three questions. What are they grateful for today?
What is it they love about themselves today?
Tell them what you love about them, that makes them unique. ?
I want to thank you for your love, support through the years. Always think of me when you have a hearty laugh. My prayer for you is that you have the most joyous life. I love you so very much!
