Philip Coleman Tasered, Dies In Police Custody After Allegedly Beating Mother

After being shocked by a Taser on two separate occasions and then sedated, a Chicago man has died while in police custody.

Police say they used a Taser on Philip Coleman, 38, after he "became combative" while in custody and spit blood at officers Wednesday evening, the Chicago Tribune reports. The Sun-Times said Coleman had been arrested around 7:15 p.m. that night allegedly beating his 69-year-old mother in the 12800 block of South Morgan.

Once in custody, police first jolted Coleman Thursday afternoon at the Calumet District Station on 111th Street when officers tried to take Coleman to court, according to WGN.

He was later taken to Roseland Community Hospital where he reportedly became aggressive with police and hospital staff, reports ABC Chicago, and was given a sedative in addition to being Tasered a second time.

Coleman died at the hospital shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday, according to the Tribune, and an autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

The man's father, Percy Coleman told several news outlets that his son, a University of Chicago graduate and masters graduate of UIC, had never been in trouble. Sources told DNAinfo Chicago that Coleman was a regular volunteer with the Rev. Jesse Jackson's Rainbow PUSH Coalition and "wouldn't hurt a fly."

"They won’t be able to run him out that he’s a drug dealer, this and that,” the elder Coleman said of authorities. "They are not going to get away with this."

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the matter.
