The opening reception of Los Angeles' international contemporary art fair (on through January 30), with exhibitions from 70 galleries from 11 countries. On opening night, West of Rome Public Art presents site-specific sculpture and performance pieces by artists Jennifer Bolande and Marnie Weber. Bolande brings her work, Plywood Curtains, an activation of the windows of empty storefronts of Los Angeles. Weber will continue to explore the role of horror in her work with a quiet infiltration.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 28
X-TRA's 1 Image 1 Minute
Ray Kurtzman Theater (Century City)

To benefit LACMA's Modern and Contemporary Arts Council, and the Art Here and Now initiative, X-TRA presents its annual 1 Image 1 Minute event, as 50 artists, curators, and members of the art community each present a significant photograph of their choosing for 1 minute. Hosted by Creative Artists Agency (CAA) in conjunction with Art Los Angeles Contemporary, the evening will feature a cocktail reception and a live presentation of the ideas and anecdotes tied to each image, ranging from funny to poignant to historically iconic. Tickets required in advance.

Southern California museums open their doors, inviting visitors free of charge to discover art, cultural heritage, natural history, science and more on January 29th and 30th. Participating institutions include: Autry National Center, California African American Museum, California Science Center, The Craft Folk and Art Museum, Fowler Museum at UCLA, The Hammer Museum, The Getty Center, The Getty Villa, Los Angeles Fire Department Museum and Memorial, The Museum of Contemporary Art, The Museum of Tolerance, Pasadena Museum of California Art, The Paley Center for Media, Santa Monica Museum of Art, Skirball Cultural Center, Studio for Southern California History, and The Watts Tower Arts Center.
Los Angeles Poverty Department: State of Incarceration

LAPD is a theater company of people living and working in Skid Row, Los Angeles. LAPD performances link lived experience to the historical and social forces that shape this experience extending from entering prison through incarceration, to release and the challenges of re-integration after prison.

All of This and Nothing

The opening of All of This and Nothing is the sixth in the Hammer's biennial invitational exhibition series curated by Douglas Fogle and Anne Ellegood. The exhibition features work by artists: Karla Black, Charles Gaines, Evan Holloway, Sergej Jensen, Ian Klaer, Jorge Macchi, Dianna Molzan, Fernando Ortega, Eileen Quinian, Gedi Sibony, Paul Sietsema, Frances Stark, Mateo Tannatt and Kerry Tribe whose work explores ideas of disappearance and reemergence, of shifting visibilities, as well as the beauty found in the everyday. For these Los Angeles and international artists, the value of their work resides more in the process of its making than in the resulting objects.
