Platinum Blonde Hair Icons: Marilyn Monroe, Scarlett Johansson & 105 More Stars Who Have Bleached (PHOTOS)

107 Platinum Hair Icons

Admittedly, I have always been a little jealous of blondes. When I was little, my brother had Robert Redford-esque locks, while I was stuck with a very short mouse-brown mop. Over the years, I have come to love my dark hair, but I still harbor some jealousy for blondes. Even those who get their color from a bottle.

And I'm clearly not the only one who feels this way -- more than a few stars have traded in their natural hair color for lighter locks. Some celebrities, like Victoria Beckham, Madonna and Drew Barrymore, are constantly jumping from blonde to brunette and back again, while others have been true to their bottle-blonde look (Gwen Stefani, how do you do it?). But platinum-colored hair is not a new look: stars in the 1920s, '30s and '40s wore their bleached locks in short curly bobs. The look became more voluminous in the 1950s, with sex symbols like Marilyn Monroe. In the 1960s, bleach blonde underwent a mod makeover, then the hippies latched on, and rock goddesses like Debbie Harry of the aptly named band Blondie, Annie Lennox and Cyndi Lauper gave the hair color an edgy twist in the 1970s and 1980s. While these stars paved the way for grungy musicians like Kim Gordon and Courtney Love in the 1990s, stars today like Amber Heard, Scarlett Johansson and Michelle Williams stun with classic Hollywood-inspired wavy platinum locks.

Take a peek at the photos below to see how white blonde hair has changed over the years -- you just may find some inspiration for a new summer look:
