Prop 8 Lawyers David Boies And Ted Olson Recall 2013's SCOTUS Victory Over Gay Marriage Rights

David Boies and Ted Olson, the bipartisan legal team who fought to overturn Prop 8, spoke at length about their 2013 Supreme Court victory in a discussion with HuffPost Live's Josh Zepps this week.

Although the U.S. Supreme Court declared that California's voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional last year, Olson says he began to feel impassioned about granting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) couples some time earlier.

The impetus, he said, can be traced back to 2004 when Gavin Newsom, who was at that point mayor of San Francisco, began allowing LGBT couples to apply for marriage licenses.

"When I saw those images back in 2004 ... something clicked," he recalled. "You just said, 'What in the world are we doing trying to prevent people from having this kind of happiness, this kind of unity?'"

Boies and Olson are the authors of a new book, Redeeming the Dream: The Case for Marriage Equality, which hits stores this week.
