Rachel Maddow: Here's Why Anti-Contraception Republicans Will Lose

Rachel Maddow said Tuesday that Republicans' political position on contraception might not be working out so well for them in elections.

"The idea that contraception has become a problem unexpectedly has become Republican party orthodoxy now, but it has also become a general election problem for Republicans," Maddow said.

Case in point, according to the MSNBC host: Colorado Congressman Cory Gardner previously supported Colorado's personhood initiatives — which sought to declare that life begins at the moment of fertilization and outlaw forms of birth control — at local levels. Gardner, who is currently challenging Senator Mark Udall, came under attack for his platform on personhood in past campaigns. Now, he's reversed his position on the issue, and critics allege that he is flip-flopping for political gain.

Maddow recalled that Colorado voters rejected personhood amendments twice, both in 2008 and 2010.

"The Republican position on contraception has become increasingly doctrinaire, while staying totally politically untenable except in Republican primaries," Maddow concluded.
