How To Sweeten Your Food With Raisins Instead Of Dates

Raisin sauce is what your life's been missing.

Dates are the go-to option in a lot of health food recipes because they provide a delicious, natural way to sweeten dishes. But dates are not the only way. The humble raisin can do the same job, and it’s often a cheaper choice, too. (Not to mention, raisins are way easier to find.)

I first tried raisin sauce when I was fortunate enough to eat breakfast at Kripalu, a renowned yoga center in the Berkshires. Everything served at the buffet-style meal was nutrient-rich and delicious, but the most memorable part of the experience was the oatmeal ― a dish I eat fairly regularly ― because I topped it with their freshly made raisin sauce. That sauce was so good I realized it had to become a staple in my fridge. And it probably should become one in yours.

We found the recipe to fill that need. It’s made by the hands of food blogger Laura Fuentes. She came up with this recipe for Raisin Paste that is so good, she always keeps on hand. Fuentes likes to add this paste to her green smoothies. We recommend swirling it into your oatmeal or using it to sweeten your all-natural granola.

Either way, your mornings are going to get just a little sweeter ― and it’s all thanks to raisins.

All you need to make raisin paste or sauce are raisins and water. You’ll soak the raisins in hot water for a few minutes to rehydrate them, and then blend them in a food processor until you get a peanut butter consistency. Really easy ― and it keeps in the fridge for up to three weeks.
