Wins 6 Pulitzers; 2 For NYT

PUBLIC SERVICE: The Washington Post for exposing the mistreatment of wounded veterans at Walter Reed Hospital.

BREAKING NEWS REPORTING: The Washington Post Staff for its coverage of the Virginia Tech massacre.

INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING: Walt Bogdanich and Jake Hooker of The New York Times for stories on toxic ingredients in medicine and other products imported from China.

INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING: The Chicago Tribune Staff for exposing faulty regulation of toys, car seats and cribs.

EDITORIAL WRITING: No Award

EDITORIAL CARTOONING: Michael Ramirez of Investor's Business Daily for what the judges called his "provocative cartoons."

BREAKING NEWS PHOTOGRAPHY: Adrees Latif of Reuters for his photograph of a Japanese videographer, sprawled on the pavement, fatally wounded during a street demonstration in Myanmar.

FEATURE PHOTOGRAPHY: Preston Gannaway of the Concord Monitor for her chronicle of a family coping with a parent's terminal illness.

Original Post: The Pulitzer prizes will be announced within hours, but various online reports indicate that it will be a very good day for the Washington Post.

Radar's Charles Kaiser and Neel Shah report that the Washington Post will take home six Pulitzers, including a prize for Steve Fainaru's articles about Blackwater in Iraq. They also report that the New York Times will receive two awards.

The New York Observer's John Koblin reports that staffers at the Post are sending similar messages:

"It's a pretty amazing atmosphere over here right now," said one reporter. "The big editors are roaming around with big smiles."

"Pretty fucking sweet for the post on the pulitzers," wrote another source, via IM.
