Even as former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich remains behind bars, serving a 14-year prison sentence outside Denver, he hasn't forgotten the love of his life, his wife Patti.

On Sunday, the couple's 22nd wedding anniversary, Patti Blagojevich shared part of a poignant e-mail that her husband sent her via e-mail to honor the occasion, the Chicago Tribune reports.

"I love you. Twenty-two years ago today we were married. Along with the birth of our daughters, it was the happiest day of my life," the e-mail read, according to the Tribune. "You know, if you think about things as a whole and not just as a part, we really have been blessed in so many ways. I sure have."

The former governor proceeded to ask his wife out on a date "next year," hinting that the 55-year-old remains optimistic that his upcoming appeal of his conviction will be successful.

Posting the message on Facebook, Patti called the message an anniversary gift that was "better than flowers," the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Blagojevich, a.k.a. inmate No. 40892-424, began serving a sentence for his federal corruption charges in March in Englewood, Colo. When Patti visited him there in May, she described the facility as "one of the saddest places on earth." The former governor has reportedly complained that he is "totally bored" in prison.

Patti earlier this month expressed frustration with her husband's delayed appeals process, Fox Chicago reported.
