Sasha Gradiva, Russian Pop Star, Says Anti-Gay Laws Aren't 'Really About Gay People'

Russia Pop Diva Says Country's Anti-Gay Laws Aren't 'Really About Gay People'

International superstars Madonna , Cher and Lady Gaga haven't minced words when it comes to Russia's controversial "gay propaganda" laws. Now, Russian pop singer Sasha Gradiva is joining them.

Gradiva, who has been called "the Madonna of Russia," told HuffPost Live that she didn't think Russia's law was "really about gay people, believe it or not."

"Russia has never been a pro-gay country, but of course with the current government direction towards gays ... we definitely see increasing cases of violence towards the LGBT community," she said.

Of Russian lawmakers' arguments that the law is aimed at protecting children rather than a restrictive measure towards the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community as a whole, she added, "Very often they compare gay people to pedophiles. Ignorance is always bad."
