Shepard Fairey, street artist extraordinaire, is venturing to the final frontier for his latest design project. He's crafted a mission patch for the Center of Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), a nonprofit organization charged with promoting and managing research aboard the International Space Station. The neon green and teal badge marks the second time in history, according to ARTINFO, that a street artist has sent work into space.
Fairey was recruited by graphic design firm, Fiction, to imagine the mission insignia for CASIS's inaugural flight, set to run from September 2013 to March 2014. Here's how the artist describes his ARK1 creation in the video above:
"I wanted to convey the most appealing aspects of the space station and then also maybe get a sense of motion. But with a patch being so small, you really need to simplify the elements to make them work in an iconic way. So reducing and abstracting the space station to something that worked with really simple forms, but was still really pleasing, was a big part of the objective."
As you can tell, Fairey is very excited about this new adventure. Has anyone told him that he will not actually be traveling through the universe with his patch? On another note, props to Fairey for that awesome Black Flag t-shirt.
