The Committee to Protect Journalists launched a digital campaign on Thursday to bring justice to a number of press murders that remain unsolved.
In partnership with a variety of international and local organizations, Speak Justice: Voices Against Impunity will seek to bring justice to the murders of journalists who were targeted for bringing the public news. The campaign will also put a spotlight on areas in which journalists need the most protection.
In July, a special prosecutor in Mexico told the courts that 67 journalists have been killed and 14 have disappeared since 2006. CPJ found that 28 journalists have been killed since the committee started keeping track in 1992. Just last month, a freelance journalist, who was covering crime, was shot dead moments after a confrontation at a highway checkpoint.
According to CPJ, "more than 660 reporters, editors, photographers, and cameramen have been murdered [around the globe], and in 90 percent of their cases, no perpetrator has been brought to justice." From CPJ's research, the majority of the journalists killed have been in the field covering politics, corruption, conflict, crime, and human rights. Nations including Iraq and Somalia have the highest impunity rates.
