Spherical Colors, Huge Formats: Roberto Matta Retrospective at Museum Frieder Burda (VIDEO)

The exhibition Matta: Fictions at Museum Frieder Burda in Baden-Baden, Germany, presents the work of one of the most influential painters of the 20th century: Roberto Matta. Matta (1911-2002) was in close contact with Surrealists such as Salvador Dalí, André Breton and Marcel Duchamp, with whom he began exhibiting in 1938. In the 1940s, while living in exile in New York City, Matta anticipated important developments in Abstract Expressionism, and his painting style shifted between figuration and abstraction.

For the first time in decades, the work of the Chilean-born artist is now shown in Germany. The exhibition stretches from Matta's beginnings as a Surrealist through to his panoramic paintings of the 1990s, and the retrospective runs until June 2, 2013.
