A Chicago man was arrested early Tuesday and charged with animal cruelty after he allegedly dragged a puppy that did not want to walk -- leaving behind a trail of blood that led police to his residence.

Neighbors informed police that they saw the blood trail left behind after Stanton Howard, 42, of the 1300 block of North Rockwell Street, allegedly dragged an 11-week-old pit bull puppy. Officers responding to the scene around 2 a.m. Tuesday followed the trail to Howard's home, where the dog owner admitted he had been "teaching her to walk" and dragged her because she was refusing to do so, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the puppy had scratches and open wounds on its stomach, paws and back. City Animal Care and Control officers took the puppy and a second pit bull puppy -- who appeared timid and weak -- away from the man in order to be evaluated. Their injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

Howard is scheduled to appear in court on May 1.
