Lights Go Out At The Statue Of Liberty

The lights briefly went out at the Statue of Liberty on Tuesday night, likely due to a power outage.

Photos of Lady Liberty circulated on Twitter showing the statue in the dark, except for her crown and torch.

The National Park Service told Buzzfeed that a portion of the statue’s lighting system experienced an “unplanned outage,” and the agency would be able to confirm the exact cause on Wednesday morning.

Though the outage was not intentional, many wondered if the lights had darkened for more than an hour as a show of solidarity with International Women’s Day. The day also marks “A Day Without A Woman,” a protest created by the organizers of the historic Women’s March on Washington that will occur in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world.

The Women’s March’s official Twitter account tweeted a photo of the scene and expressed its gratitude for standing with women during the strike.

Others wondered if the lights had to do with Lady Liberty symbolically mourning due to President Donald Trump’s latest executive order limiting refugees, immigration and travel.

Although the moment was unrelated to Women’s Day or Trump’s immigration policy, the timing of the outage was quite a coincidence.
