Steven Spielberg & Bill Clinton: 'Lincoln' Director Got Former President To Golden Globes Stage

How Did Bill Clinton Wind Up At The Golden Globes?

Bill Clinton surprised nearly everyone when he took the stage to introduce "Lincoln" at the 70th annual Golden Globes on Sunday night. According to Deadline.com, Clinton's appearance was kept under such tight wraps that only a select few within DreamWorks, the studio behind "Lincoln," and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association knew the 42nd president was set to make an appearance. Per the trade site, it was director Steven Spielberg who helped convince Clinton to introduce the film.

From HuffPost Entertainment's coverage of the Clinton appearance:

"A tough fight to push a bill through a bitterly divided Congress," Clinton began before describing how difficult it was for Lincoln to pass the 13th amendment. "Winning it required the president to make a lot of unsavory deals that had nothing to do with the big issue. I wouldn't know anything about that," Clinton quipped, much to the delight of the crowd. Several actors and actresses were spotted taking cell phone photos of Clinton.

Despite the support from Clinton, "Lincoln" came up relatively empty at the Golden Globes. The film, which received seven nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, won just one award: Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for Daniel Day-Lewis.

"Are you sure there's room for another ex-president on this stage?" Day-Lewis said while accepting his award, apparently still in deep method mode from his performance as Abraham Lincoln.
