On Tuesday, Subway's own anointed "world's fastest sandwich maker" is putting the title to the test -- officially.
Guinness World Records will be on hand as Subway employee Sal Rodriguez attempts the record for "Most Sandwiches Created at Once” by making 555 Subway Club sandwiches with avocado in New York City.
Rodriguez, who works at a Florence, Arizona Subway location, last week won the chain's Sub Jammers competition in Orlando, Florida, where he took home top honors. The competition had featured 150 Subway "sandwich artists" from nine countries.
Rodriguez's speed is impressive. Restaurantnews.com writes that at the Sub Jammers event, Rodriguez built a Subway Footlong sandwich in only 51.1 seconds. Rodriguez told the site that the experience was "humbling" and that he was happy to "be number one in something I do every day."
He offered advice to other would-be sandwich champs through local station FOX 10 News:
"Love your job, love the job first, then you'll be able to do it. If you can't love your job then you're not going to be able to do it."
Not that Rodriguez hasn't had practice. Rodriguez has worked 13 years as a Subway employee, since he was 16 years old.
