Sue Simmons-- the much-loved former WNBC news anchor, who was on the air for 32 years until this past June-- has caught the acting bug.

The New York Post reports the veteran newscaster will star in Law and Order: SVU's two-part premiere starting September 26.

She plays a reporter named Sue Simmons.

Warren Leight, executive producer of the popular show, praised Simmons' acting chops and said, "She was terrific. It wasn’t like she needed extra takes. You never know what you’re going to get [when using real news people] but it wasn’t an issue with Sue. She also had a couple of smart corrections [in the script] as to how she would say something."

According to Leight, 69-year old Simmons was the first name to come up for the cast when deciding who should take the role.

Back in March, loyal fans of Simmons were shocked at news of her firing and quickly took to social media to launch a Save Sue Simmons Twitter account, #SaveSueSimmons hashtag, and Save Sue Simmons Facebook Page.

Alas, the efforts of proved futile, and the longest running co-anchor team that was Sue Simmons and Chuck Scarborough came to an end.

Simmons was legendary for some of her on-air gaffes. See our favorite moments below:
