Halloween candy and parts of costumes strewn across the street is any parent's nightmare.

And that was the scene in South Los Angeles Wednesday after a hit-and-run driver hit a mother trick-or-treating, CBS reports in the video above.

Susan Washington, 46, was trick-or-treating with her 9-year-old son, Nathaniel, and his friend, Alvin Hardy, in Watts when a car sped around the corner.

“The last thing I remember is walking across the street and pushing the kids out of the way,” Washington said. “All I remember is my baby crying and saying, ‘That’s my mother.’ I didn’t think I was going to make it.”

Nathaniel said that two people came out of the car, looked at his mom and ran away from the scene. The police found the suspect’s car -- a silver Suzuki with a Washington state license plate -- a couple blocks away, with no sign of the suspects.

The heroic mom told CBS, “I just want to say to the people who did this… I’m praying for you and just turn yourself in."
