Gender inequality is real and women live with it every day. It's the 21st century and yet women are still paid less than men for doing the same job, are routinely denied equal opportunity, and subject to insane societal rules regarding their gender. Even with Sony recently making headlines by paying the female lead of an upcoming blockbuster more than the male lead, it's not enough.

GirlTalk HQ is working to even out the playing field. The website, dedicated to sharing daily news about global female empowerment, has launched an awareness campaign to push for gender equality in the marketplace with a petition aimed at removing the "Pink Tax" in Canada.

According to a recent study conducted by Toronto-based ParseHub, Canadian women pay an average of 43 percent more for services and products than men pay for comparable items. What it means is that products that are targeted to women -- shaving cream, razors, deodorants, shampoo -- are priced higher than the same products for men. This is known as the Pink Tax and it can add up to almost $2,000 per year.
