Timothy Masters Receives $4.1 Million From Larimer County For Wrongful Imprisonment

Larimer County has agreed to pay a wrongly imprisoned man $4.1 million to settle a lawsuit he filed after DNA evidence proved his innocence.

Timothy Masters was convicted in 1999 for the murder of Peggy Hettrick in Fort Collins in 1987. After 10 years in prison and two appeals, a judge overturned the conviction because DNA evidence found on Hettrick's body did not belong to Masters.

In 2008, Masters was the first person ever freed from prison in the state of Colorado because of DNA evidence.

The lawsuit Masters filed claimed detectives and prosecutors targeted him and destroyed or withheld evidence that would have cleared him.

The settlement was approved unanimously by the Larimer County Board of County Commissioners Tuesday morning.
