Tom Ford Feels 'Repulsed' By His Contribution To Consumer Culture

Tom Ford is dealing with guilt.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the designer said, “I struggle with the fact that I help create this contemporary consumer culture, and at the same time, I’m repulsed by it and disturbed by it.”

When we talk about consumer culture, we’re talking about humans purchasing 80 billion new items of clothing each year. And in 2015, U.S. consumers alone spent more than $250 billion on clothing and accessories, the Census Bureau estimates.

A conscientious designer who wants to make money while still having a moral compass, Ford thinks all consumers need to keep their priorities in perspective.

“We live in a material world; material beauty brings us a certain level of enjoyment in our lives,” Ford said in the video above. “But we can’t let it overtake that.”
