Like Mitt Romney, Tommy Thompson is refusing to release his tax returns.
Thompson, the former Republican governor of Wisconsin, is running against Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) for the state's open U.S. Senate seat. Baldwin has released 10 years of her tax returns, and Democrats are calling on Thompson to do the same.
When asked at a campaign stop in Waukesha on Thursday if he was going to follow Baldwin's lead, Thompson replied, "Why should I?" He then, according to WisPolitics.com, asked a reporter if he would release his.
Thompson argued that because he hasn't been in government for the past 10 years, he has no obligation to release his tax returns.
"I have not been in the government. I've been in the private sector," Thompson said. "The answer is no."
Wisconsin Democratic Party Chair Mike Tate said the 10 years are important, however, because it's "when Tommy Thompson has been cashing in on his name and selling his influence."
Voters chose Thompson as the GOP nominee in Tuesday's primary, where he bested three other candidates. A recent poll showed Thompson and Baldwin tied, with each favored by 47 percent of likely Wisconsin voters.
