A 1-year-old girl is in critical condition after she and her mother were shot while sleeping in their South Side home.

Tonishia Allen, 24, and her daughter Jaliyah were asleep in a back bedroom when two shots were fired through the window around 1:20 a.m., NBC Chicago reports. The child was struck in the head and her mother was shot in the leg.

Jaliyah is currently in surgery at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to Fox Chicago. Doctors say the child could be in surgery for another 4-8 hours.

“We are hoping for the best but, as far as we know, there’s damage to her brain," Tina Cornell, Allen's mother, told the Chicago Tribune.

The incident is not the family's first tragic brush with violence. Cornell lost a daughter in a 2007 shooting, according to CBS.

Fox reports that Allen doesn't even live in the home regularly, but stays there while attending school nearby.

“It’s just crazy how we’re killing each other,” Allen's grandfather told the station. "The violence in the city is outrageous."

Police are investigating, but don't currently have any suspects, ABC7 reports.

The shooting comes as the Chicago Police Department reported a 60 percent increase in homicides during the first three months of the year, despite an increase in police resources.

CPD data showed that nonfatal shootings also rose sharply in the first quarter compared with the same three months in 2011.

Police blame much of the violence on the city's more than 70 active gangs and their tens of thousands of members. The mayor has urged residents to take a stand against gangs in their communities.
