Do you dread waking up on Monday mornings? Ever wonder if the work you are doing is adding value? Do you wish you had a better relationship with your boss?

You are not alone; an overwhelming number of Americans are dissatisfied with their jobs and are looking for a way to escape their career anxieties. According to the latest findings from a survey of more than 150,000 full and part-time workers in Gallup's State of the American Workplace Report, 70% of employees are not engaged or inspired at work. More than half of workers are not excited about their jobs.

Being disconnected from your job can negatively impact other areas of your life. After all, most Americans (especially highly-skilled professionals) spend more time at work than at their homes, so work dissatisfaction can spoil moments that you should be enjoying.

You only have one life, and it's your job to make it your best life. If you are not happy, you must first realize that you have the power to change it.

That's exactly what I did: I received the internship of my dreams⎯or so I thought. It turned out to be a waking nightmare. The salary and perks were rewarding, but the mental pain I felt covered me in bruises every day. I expected long hours, but I didn't expect the lack of freedom and social anxiety that would come from that. I could've adapted to the situation, but my heart was deprived of everything that I thought a career should be. I was suffering from a career funk.

So I did what any 20-year-old with a socially conscious desire to change the world would do. I ended the relationship and allowed myself to be open to the possibilities that were waiting for me. Once I released the old, new opportunities came faster than I could blink my eyes.

Not everyone has the courage to leave their abusive careers⎯especially if you have invested so much time into the job. It takes more than courage. It requires a mental shift. You have to realize that there is always a chance to start over and create the life that you want.
