Verrazano Bridge Eric Garner Protest Briefly Stalls Traffic During Morning Rush Hour

Garner Protest Shuts Down Bridge During Morning Rush

A small group of protesters holding signs briefly stopped traffic on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York during the Monday morning rush.

More than a dozen people held banners across that read "Eric Garner" and "Mike Brown" and "#ThisStopsToday" across three lanes of traffic on the eastbound side for about 7 minutes, according to multiple posts on social media.

Traffic in the westbound lanes appeared to be unaffected. Photos and video of the action proliferated on social media Monday morning.

People held the road to the bridge for #7minutes, the length of Ramsey Orta's video of NYPD killing #EricGarner. #ThisStopsToday

The action was in protest of a grand jury's decision last week not to indict NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo in the death of Staten Island man Eric Garner. It is one of many demonstrations nationwide since last Wednesday's ruling.

The Verrazano connects the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Staten Island. In August, a march across the bridge to protest Garner's death was canceled after the organizers decided to go to Ferguson, Missouri instead.

This is a developing story.
