If you are a fan of romance, you likely saw the finale of The Bachelor last night. Before Ben got down on one knee to propose to Lauren, he called her father to ask for his blessing. What a gentleman right? However, I was not surprised to wake up this morning and read several articles online about how you don't have to ask for "permission" to propose anymore these days.

I am a professional proposal planner and have helped thousands of men propose. My stance is that you should in fact attempt to get the blessing of your would-be fiancé's parents. Here is why:

IT'S A TRADITION

When it comes to marriage proposals, thankfully there are still some traditions that normally take place in each proposal. Some of those common traditions include a diamond ring being presented, getting down on bended knee, and asking her parents for their blessing.

IT'S NOT ACTUALLY ASKING FOR PERMISSION

Asking for a blessing is completely different than asking for permission. You are asking for a blessing as a sign of respect and to show the family that you do value their approval. What you do with their response is up to you.

START OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT

Maybe you don't necessarily believe you should ask for her parent's blessing, but what if their family is expecting that? You don't want to enter into a marriage on the wrong foot. I say, it is better to be safe than sorry, and just ask for the blessing. The chance they will be offended you asked is very minimal, but the chance they will be hurt you didn't is far greater.

YOU GET AN ALLY

Planning a proposal is difficult and you won't have too many people you trust to share your plans with. Once you tell her family that you are going to propose, you will have someone you can start sharing your ring choice and proposal plans with, if you choose.

MAKE HER HAPPY

Many women have been dreaming about their marriage proposals since they were little girls. Some of those dreams include their Prince Charming asking their daddy for his blessing. If you think there is a chance that she would be let down if you didn't do it, you should do it.

Asking for her parents blessing can be nerve-wracking. However, in order to get things off on a good foot and to honor important traditions, it should at least be considered.
