Will The City Clerk's Office Be Eliminated?

Chicago's last two city clerks have gone to prison, turning the office into an easy target for those who want to abolish it.

Now a commission appointed by Mayor Daley to examine the scope and structure of government is suggesting that Chicago take the first step toward eliminating the office.

The 21st Century Commission wants Daley to "cross-train and combine cashiering positions" with an eye toward "concentrating all city cashiering functions in the city's Department of Revenue." Cashiers from Revenue and the clerk's office operate out of the same large room on the first floor of City Hall.

Such a merger could save the city as much as $1.3 million a year in personnel and overtime costs and shorten waiting times.
