Windows Phone 7 Sales: 1.5 Million Devices Sold In 6 Weeks

Microsoft has finally announced sales figures for its Windows Phone 7 platform, launched in the United States on November 8.

"We are pleased that phone manufacturers sold over 1.5 million phones in the first six weeks," Achim Berg, vice president of business and marketing for Windows Phones, said during a sit-down with the Microsoft News Center.

Though Berg also spoke confidently about the future of Windows Phone 7, the sales figures he presented do not necessarily reflect the number of devices consumers have purchased.

As Berg noted during the "interview," the 1.5 million number represents phone manufacturer sales--"[P]hones being bought and stocked by mobile operators and retailers on their way to customers," as Berg explained.

"Apple probably sells this many iPhones every ten days or less," Business Insider wrote, adding some context to Microsoft's number. "And Android activates this many phones every seven days or so."

Berg went on to emphasize Microsoft's commitment to mobile. "We know we have tough competition, and this is a completely new product," he said. "We're in the race -- it's not a sprint but we are certainly gaining momentum and we're in it for the long run."
