Kira Derhgawen Reunites With Jan Hungerford, Woman Who Rescued Her 62 Years Ago (VIDEO)

A Calif. woman was recently reunited with the abandoned newborn she rescued more than 60 years ago.

In April of 1951, Jan Hungerford discovered a day-old baby left in her car near her Concord, Calif., home, according to KGO. "There was a little blue bundle on the passenger side front seat of the car, powder blue blanket, wrapped papoose style," she told the news source.

The baby was Kira Derhgawen, now 62, who was thought to be abandoned by her parents. However, a letter from Derhgawen's birth mother explained that the baby had been taken from her against her will, CBS reports.

"I cut her picture out of the paper and carry it in my wallet. I cry when I think of her. I love her so much," the letter stated according to NBC.

Derhgawen recently uncovered the letter and has been searching for her birth mother. Her quest led her back to the Bay Area and brought Hungerford back into her life, according to KGO. The pair were reunited in Oakland on Monday and said they felt "like family."

"I'll be happy whether or not I find her, but it might add as much joy to my life as meeting Jan, seeing Jan, being reunited with Jan face-to-face," Derhgawen told KGO.
