F. Scott Hess, Self-Portrait with Upturned Collar, 2011, oil on aluminum panel, 24 Γ— 18 inches, Private Collection.
I painted this while preparing a lecture on the Position of the Viewer for my LCAD MFA class. The idea of the Lacanian Gaze interested me at the time, and led to the appropriation of bits of the great Velasquez painting, Las Meninas. This is found in the pose of the artist and the detail of the little painting on the wall depicting the court dwarf kicking a German Sheperd.
