The Critics' Choice Awards brought more signals that hair trends are on the move.
Host T. J. Miller walked the 'blue' carpet in Santa Monica with wife, Kate Gorney, who beautifully exemplified a new trend this year toward warm, coppery reds. Bryce Dallas Howard also did a really warm red with hints of copper.
"Fargo" star Kristen Dunst did a gorgeous sleek bob in blonde with dark base and accents. Bobs are trending strong and Dunst was joined by Helen Mirren in a blonde tone-on-tone, and Mary J. Blige, who wore her blonde bob with bangs for a retro-60s twist. The possibilities for bobs are endless, part of why they're trending so strong.
Updos are on the move, too. Constance Zimmer posed on the blue carpet at Barker Hangar in a dark, dark brown color with bangs and face-framing wisps. This is a lovely, playful, romantic look that worked so well with her rich red lipstick. Joan Jett stayed true to her roots with an '80s rocker pixie in black. Deep side parts continue trending strong. Kathryn Hahn went with this look for her long brown hair.
Marisa Tomei and Krysten Ritter went with long dark hair and center parts, both of which have been on a long run of popularity - Hey, it works. Jennifer Anniston also remained stylish with a center part and longer hair, similar to what she did last year at these awards, this time in light brown with blonde highlights framing her face.
Last year at the Critics' Choice, we saw a lot of what I describe as effortless styles. That's been a long trend in hair. It is simple, carefree and beautiful. Colors appear natural with subtle transitions, lots of tone-on-tone, a far cry from the ombres. Waves were natural, loose, or nearly straight.
Anniston was emblematic of that trend last year at this event. She was darker at the roots, almost like her hair was naturally darkening from a sun-kissed summer blonde. We saw lots of ponytails and slick-back hair. Even recently when we've seen some vibrant candy streaks of color, the transitions have typically been pretty soft.
Now, we seem to be on the move. I'm betting this will be an exciting year for hair. Can't wait to see more!
