For employers, finding technology workers is no easy task. In fact, technology workers rank among the third most difficult positions to fill. So what's going on, and how can employers compensate?

Plenty of companies are making attempts to alleviate broad skills gaps in the workforce today -- 41 percent of companies already have programs in place to address it, such as job training programs and mentoring programs, or opportunities for employees to go back to school. But when it comes to filling technology positions, employers have to think more strategically. After all, many employers are fighting with competitors to snag talent.

The infographic below, compiled by RemarkableHire, a talent sourcing platform that uses social evidence to help companies find and evaluate technology candidates, spells out the best geographical locations to find tech candidates -- and the best ways to retain them. A few key points include:

  • 25 percent of companies plan to hire job candidates with SaaS and related cloud-computing expertise this year
  • 40 percent of companies plan to hire project managers
  • 89 percent of employees point to telecommuting options as a top employee perk
  • Top tech companies -- like Facebook, Google, and Twitter -- offer workplace and cultural incentives, like on-site gyms and nap rooms, to retain tech employees
