Arianna appeared on Tuesday's Morning Joe to comment on The Huffington Post's first Pulitzer Prize for Beyond The Battlefield, a 10-part series on wounded veterans.

She praised David Wood, HuffPost's senior military correspondent and the author of the series, for the way he approached the subject matter.

"When he writes about these issues, he doesn't pretend to be at arm's length," she said. "He allows himself to empathize, to be there, to be in those homes after the vets return."

Arianna said she wanted Afghanistan to be brought back into the center of the presidential campaign, and urged an increased focus on the toll of war for veterans and their families.

"So many of our returning vets are so severely wounded, so many of them are taking their own lives," she said. "What is tragic is the fact that all this is happening in an unnecessary war, without a clear mission, without knowing what good we are doing there."

"We are only there because there is no political will to leave."
